Incoming events 

15.4. at 11–13 Badge market 

The university hall is once again filled with an amazing number of associations! If your overalls need a touch-up and maintenance for May Day, now is a great opportunity to complete your badge collection at the university hall’s badge market. 15.4. at 18–22 GameShow-sitz 

Lights on, fanfares playing, and competitive spirit to the roof! Dear spectators and competitors, a warm welcome to start RöllöWappu with LYY’s splendid GameShow seats, where every answer can be fatal, every challenge legendary, and every move a strategic choice. The grand seats will be held in the university main lobby on April 15 at 6:00 PM. Ticket sales for the event will begin on kide.app on April 1 at 12:00 PM. 

22.4. at 12–15 El Classico 

The University of Lapland and Lapland UAS will once again measure themselves against each other when these two titans meet on a football match at Keskuskenttä on Wednesday, April 22 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. An amazing match awaits, in which you can participate as a player or as part of the cheering squad. Player registration begins on kide.app on April 7 at 2:00 PM. 

26.4. at 12–13 LYYtiset on Radio Säteily 

The Executive Board of LYY gathers to the studio of Radio Säteily to discuss on the office’s beginning of year and other relevant topics. Turn your radio to 89.00 MHz at Rovaniemi area or listen the broadcast with web radio of Radio Säteily from the following link https://www.sateily.com/. The broadcast will be held in Finnish.  

28.4. at 9–10 LYYtiset on Radio Säteily 

Vice-rectors of the University of Lapland Piia Björn and Sari Lindblom arrive to the studio as guests. Both vice-rectors started on their positions at the beginning of year 2025. Turn your radio to 89.00 MHz at Rovaniemi area or listen the broadcast with web radio of Radio Säteily from the following link https://www.sateily.com/. 30.4. at 14–16 Wappu traditions 

Wappu Parade & The Crowning of the Lumberjack Statue – Rovaniemi’s Biggest Wappu Spectacle!   

Rovaniemi’s legendary Lumberjack takes the lead role once again as students gather on Wappu Eve to capture the moment with the traditional crowning! This is a classic you don’t want to miss – a live performance with the whole city as the audience!   

30.4. at 22–04 Wappu finale 

Dear friends, students, partygoers, and everyone who ended up here in pursuit of a good vibe – now there’s no holding back, now we celebrate the Wappu finale together to the fullest!   

Welcome to the 2026 RöllöWappu grand finale. Wappu reaches its peak in the hottest parties of the night as lights flicker, the dance floor fills, and the bass thunders until morning. Pull on your overalls, gather your friends, and head to the night’s final and hardest party. The Wappu finale is here, and you won’t want to miss this evening! 🔥

Advocacy 

11.3. Meeting with university lecturers on tourism and housing 

We met Maria Hakkarainen and Minni Haanpää, tourism research university lecturers. They presented their political recommendations on tourism and housing, which they have released. We talked about how we could find solutions on reducing the negative impact on housing caused by tourism industry activities at the area. 

11.3. Selection of student tutors for semester 2026-2027 

Executive Board member (BM) Markkanen and Specialist of Student Affairs (SSA) Ulkuniemi managed the selection process of student tutors on co-operations with subject associations and university staff. The selections were confirmed on the meeting 5/2026 of the Executive Board. 

11.3. Tourism tax evening of the Rovaniemi city 

BM Markkanen and SSA Ulkuniemi attended the tourism tax evening of the Rovaniemi city held at Arktikum. Discussion of the event was about how the possible income of the tourism tax should be allocated and which other kind of fees could be charged from tourists. We mentioned the importance of funding housing building, improving the public transportation and funding the activities of Lapha. 

Changes to Student Income During the Summer and Summer Studies at the University of Lapland 

We posted an informational advocacy post about students’ income during summer and summer studies available at the University of Lapland during incoming summer in our Instagram, Facebook and website. Read more about the topic from our info post

Past events 

14.3. Arctic Pride parade 

LYY participated in the Arctic Pride parade in Rovaniemi this year as well. The Executive Board represented the students under the rainbow-colored LYY flag. Various of subject associations were represented 🌈 

Other 

University of Lapland apparel is available for pickup 

The apparel ordered during spring’s sale has arrived and available to pick up. You can come get your apparel from LYYs service point at the D-wing of the university starting at Monday of week 14 during its opening hours, which are Monday to Thursday at 12-14. Please note that LYY stores the apparel for six (6) months as it’s said at the website of Kloffa. 

12.3.–13.3. Periphery student union meeting at Oulu 

Chair of the Executive Board (COB) Turkia, BM Korkiakoski, BM Markkanen and BM Näsälä attended the years’ first meeting of the Periphery student unions held at Oulu. During the meeting we got to discover the Linnanmaa campus of the University of Oulu, attend interesting sector-based discussions on relevant topics and got to know the board members of the other student unions during evening program. Thank you host organisation OYY and other attenders! 

Meetings with the Chair and Vice-chair of the Executive Board of LYY and the subject association’s chairpersons 

COB Turkia and (V)COB Kaarnivuo have met actively with the chairpersons of subject associations during March. The meetings have gone through the greetings and relevant topics of subject organisations from the beginning of the board term. The discussions have been fruitful and have created a good basis for cooperation with subject associations. 

Participation in SYL activities 

Cooperation between National Union for University Students in Finland and LYY is ongoing and visible in LYY’s activities. In March BM Aho and BM Markkanen have commented SYL’s material archive fon  sustainable development and presented wishes for the themes in it including AI’s impact on environment, environmental aspects for advocacy meetings with stakeholders and data about sustainable travelling. In addition our representatives in different sectors have participated in online meetings for their own sector and COB Turkia and SG Tuppi participated to a leadership seminar in Helsinki. LYY was also representated at SYL’s 105. Annual ball in Helsinki.  

Annual Ball representation during end of February and March 

In the end February and March, we attended the 66th Annual Ball of the Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY), 13th Annual Ball of Kosmos Buran, 16th Annual Ball of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) and 39th Annual Ball of Remburssi ry.
