Activities

LYY organizes a lot of events and it is a big part of the local student life. As a member of LYY you get to enjoy the remarkable student culture and create unforgettable memories with other students. All of our events are interdisciplinary, so you have an amazing opportunity to connect with people from other faculties and majors. There are harassment contact persons from the Student Union and from subject associations in the events. That’s how we are able to guarantee everyone a nice experience. Harassment contact persons contact information.

The event sector of the Student Union is responsible for the free time activities. We inform the students of interesting events and we obviously take part in planning the activities, too. We offer sports activities, culture events and events related to working life.

The free time sector lies in the hands of the members of the Executive Board who are responsible for free time activities. Any member of LYY can plan and organize events by joining the student union’s free time committee. You can always suggest for new events or campaigns and join the free time committee’s assemblies where the most of all the ideas for events are generated and then produced!

Events

Take a look at yearly recurring events below.

Autumn Events

Freshers’ Fair
Freshers’ Fair is held every year for new students. During the fair, freshers and senior students have the opportunity to learn about the activities of local organizations and businesses. The event takes place at the University of Lapland, where the hallways are filled with exhibition booths, each more interesting than the last. Take this opportunity to discover new hobbies and leisure activities! The event is also a great chance to collect new overalls patches.

Semester Start Party – Varjoavajaiset
Before the university’s official opening ceremony, students’ fall semester begins with the Semester Start Party. Taking place in late August or early September, this event is exactly where students returning from summer break meet one another and get to know the new faces on campus.

LYY’s Annual Ball
LYY, which belongs to everyone, deserves a birthday celebration worthy of its stature. It is customary to celebrate LYY as part of the academic annual celebrations in early October. These celebrations are open to everyone, but seating is always limited. The annual celebration typically includes a three-course dinner, award ceremonies, and spectacular performances, followed by an after-party. So if you don’t manage to snag a dinner ticket for the main event, you’re always welcome to join the after-party!

Winter Events

Arctic Appro
Held in November, Arctic Appro brings together hundreds of students from across Finland to complete various exams under Arctic conditions. At this event, each participant is personally responsible for the quality and number of their own exams, which can be taken at local bars and restaurants. After the coldest and most educational school of the winter, students can celebrate their exams with a joint after-party alongside their fellow students. LYY organizes Arctic Appro in collaboration with ROTKO, the student union of Lapland University of Applied Sciences.

Independence Day Candle Event
On December 6, LYY organizes an Independence Day torchlight procession from the city center to the Heroes’ Graves. The event takes place in nearly every university town in Finland. As dusk falls and the torches glow, the atmosphere is festive and celebratory. Participants in the procession receive a commemorative Candle Event overalls patch.

Spring Events

Students’ Shrove
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated at the Student Union with the traditional snow festival and evening parties. In recent years, the day has been organized in collaboration with the student union of the university of applied sciences. The snow festival program has included, among other things, a snow soccer tournament and the “Pimp my Sled” sled customization contest. In the evening, everyone raises a toast and the day’s most successful competitors are awarded prizes.

RöllöWappu
Student May Day celebrations (Vappu or Wappu) in Rovaniemi lasts over two weeks. The Student Union’s role in organizing Wappu is to bring the entire student body together and to organize and market the events. Student organizations host events throughout the week, which culminates in the traditional crowning of the Jätkä statue and LYY’s own Wappu festivities. In recent years, the Wappu Bracelet has served as your ticket to RöllöWappu, allowing you to enjoy events at a special price and sometimes even for free. Follow RöllöWappu and stay up to date on Wappu events!
