LYY organizes a lot of events and it is a big part of the local student life. As a member of LYY you get to enjoy the remarkable student culture and create unforgettable memories with other students. All of our events are interdisciplinary, so you have an amazing opportunity to connect with people from other faculties and majors. There are harassment contact persons from the Student Union and from subject associations in the events. That’s how we are able to guarantee everyone a nice experience. Harassment contact persons contact information.
The culture sector of the Student Union is responsible for the free time activities. We inform the students of interesting events and we obviously take part in planning the activities, too. We offer sports activities, culture events and events related to working life. The culture sector takes care of LYY’s social media campaigns on environmental issues and wellbeing as well. The campaigns are annually built on relevant themes.
The free time sector lies in the hands of the members of the Executive Board who are responsible for free time activities but also the Adviser of Organizations and Communications. Any member of LYY can plan and organize events by joining the student union’s free time committee. You can always suggest for new events or campaigns and join the free time committee’s assemblies where the most of all the ideas for events are generated and then produced!

Fall
The Freshman Fair
The Freshman Fair (aka Fuksimessut) is produced annually for the new students. In the Finnish student culture fuksi means a freshman. Both the freshmen and the senior students have a chance to get familiar with the local associations and companies during the fair. The event is always held at the university and therefore the hallways are filled with ever so captivating fair stands. From the fair one can also find a new free time activity or a hobby. There are many different kind of student patches for sale, too.
The Shadow Opening
Before the main opening event of the study year, the students have their own celebration called the Shadow Opening event. The Shadow Opening takes place around the end of August or the beginning of September. It’s the perfect opportunity for the students returning from their summer vacation to reconnect with each other and get to know the new faces.
Fuksiaiset
The freshmen, known in the Finnish University culture as fuksit, have their own ceremony where they become a part of the student community. Fuksiaiset is a fun mixture of a competition and a celebration organized by the subject associations, where the students are divided into teams that try to complete tasks in multiple places around Rovaniemi city centre. In the end of the event the Student Union gathers all the students in one place to celebrate. We want to remind all the tutors and other people responsible of the tasks that no one should be humiliated or forced into doing something. Let´s make it smooth!
The Week of Wellbeing
The Week of Wellbeing is produced yearly and the idea of it is to bring wellbeing at the campus! The week consists of different kinds of campaigns and traditionally a fair. The Week of Wellbeing is organized by LYY in cooperation with the university sports and the wellbeing services.
LYY’s annual celebration
Everyone’s beloved LYY deserves a birthday party that truly shows its value. Traditionally, we have celebrated LYY in the form of an academic annual celebration in the beginning of October. The party is open for all but there is a limit to the amount of participants each year. In the annual celebration there is a three course dinner, awarding and spectacular performances. After the formal part is over the party people continue their way to the afterparty. Being so, you can join us at the after party if you don’t manage to get a dinner ticket for the annual celebration!
The Fair Trade Week
LYY supports fair trade and works in favor of it. Hence, LYY organizes a Fair Trade Week every year. During the week the campus of the University of Lapland is filled with a variety of events and campaigns. In producing the Fair Trade Week LYY collaborates with the Green Office team and the campus pastor. In the previous years we have experienced wine tasting, discussion events, and a REKO day, which was a local food distribution day that was held right out of the university main doors.
Winter
Arctic Appro
November summons the students from all over Finland to complete ”degrees” in the Arctic Appro event. At the event in question, everyone’s responsible of the quantity and the quality of their own degrees – which are completed in the local bars, pubs and night clubs. After completing the most intense and instructive teachings one can rave it up at the joint afterparty with their fellows. LYY organizes Arctic Appro together with the student union of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, ROTKO.
Beat the Polar Night
Beat the Polar Night aka Kaamos Kumoon is a wellbeing event and a culture event, that aims to bring light in the middle of darkness. The purpose of this day is to cheer the students up during the darkest time of the year in the form of events and free time activities. In the previous years LYY has e.g. brought care dogs at the campus for cuddling and arranged offers for theater performances. Traditionally FSHS has brought a light therapy lamp at the campus, too. The polar night is a rough time but luckily this day will bring some light to your life!
The Independence Day Parade
On the 6th of December LYY traditionally organizes a torch parade that moves from the city centre to the graveyard next to the church. The event is held in almost every University city in Finland. The darkening evening and the luminescence of the torches create an atmosphere of celebration. The participants of the parade get a specific torch parade patch.
Spring
The Students’ Shrovetide
The Shrovetide in the Student Union means a snow happening and an evening party. In the last few years the day have been held in collaboration with the Student Union of University of Applied Sciences. The snow happening includes the snow soccer tournament and the ”Pimp my Pulkka” event, where the students have an opportunity to compete by pimping their sleds. At the evening party we have a wild time and award the best contestants.
Arctic YummyAppro
The YummyAppro happens in April and it might just be the most delicious event of the year. The cafés of Rovaniemi open their doors with all sorts of offers and your job is to taste as many delicacies as you can. Now you can seek for the yummiest treat in town with a good conscience and earn a patch for it!
RöllöWappu
The students’ May Day in Rovaniemi takes a bit longer than a week. The Student Union’s role in producing the May Day celebrations is to gather the whole student community together and to organize and market the events. The associations organize events throughout the whole seven to nine days and the May Day week culminates to the traditional events where the Jätkänpatsas gets a cap on its head and afterwards the LYY members have their own celebration. The May Day wristband has worked as an entrance ticket to many events. However, to some events it won’t cover the whole price but it will get you the ticket with a discount. Follow RöllöWappu and stay updated on the events of May Day.
