Warm congratulations on being offered a study place! Welcome to the University of Lapland and, through that, to membership in the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY). On these pages, you will find information about what LYY actually is and how you can make use of its services. Below are a few things that are good to keep in mind as you begin your student life.
Get to know LYY’s activities. Through the link, you will find plenty of information about what the student union is and how it operates. We especially recommend checking out the information about your future subject association on our website. Your subject association will guide you through the ins and outs of university life during your first weeks and support you as you begin this new phase of life.
Be sure to follow LYY on Instagram and Facebook! You should also follow the Wellness Pass (Hyvinvointipassi) on Instagram.
You received instructions with your admission letter explaining how to register as an attending student for the upcoming academic year. As part of the registration process, you will also pay the student union membership fee and thereby become a member of LYY. Be sure to complete your registration on time, as after the registration period has ended, you will be required to pay a re-registration fee in order to enroll.
You can find more information about annual registration on the University of Lapland’s website.
Registration is completed through the Oili service. Registration for the new academic year opens in early June.
When registering, you can also purchase the Wellness Pass. The Wellness Pass gives you access to a wide range of cultural and sports services alongside your studies. If you purchase the pass during your annual registration, you will receive activation instructions by email before the autumn season begins. You can also purchase the pass through the Kide.app application.
The easiest way to apply for student financial aid is through the online service of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela). It is advisable to submit your application well in advance, as student financial aid can be granted at the earliest from the beginning of the month in which the application is submitted.
More information about student financial aid and how to apply for it can also be found on the University’s website.
Once the academic term has begun and you have registered as an attending student and paid the student union membership fee, you can immediately obtain your student card, which gives you access to a wide range of student benefits and discounts! The student card is also an essential everyday tool for receiving student-priced meals as well as discounts on train and bus travel.
Student housing in Rovaniemi is provided by the Domus Arctica Foundation (DAS). On DAS’s website, you can explore available student apartments and submit a housing application. Private landlords also advertise rental apartments through various channels, including LYY’s popular housing rental listings page.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can also contact the LYY office by email at lyy@lyy.fi or by phone at +358 44 787 5670.
