The board of Lapin Lyyli Ltd. has decided at its meeting on 31.1. on the voluntary termination of business and proposes to the general meeting that the limited company should be dissolved. The reason behind the decision is the significant drop in business profitability after the corona virus. With the decision, Meidän Lovisa’s lunch cafe will close its doors.
“We want to thank all our customers, staff and stakeholders over the years. However, continuing the business is not well-grounded, because the university unfortunately no longer has lunchers and coffee drinkers like before, as distance learning and working has increased so much,” CEO Miikka Keränen says.
Lapin Lyyli Oy currently runs the Meidän Lovisa lunch cafe at the University of Lapland, and the company is owned by the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY), i.e. the students. The student union has had many kinds of business over the years, and Lovisa has been a meeting place for students for more than 30 years.
“It is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to an essential part of the Lapland university community,” Keränen continues.
Meidän Lovisa will close its doors on 15.2. and is therefore closed at least until the end of spring. The current manager is moving to a new job at the beginning of March, and the board did not reopen the position for applications. The board proposes to LYY’s Representative Council and the copany general meeting that the business should be terminated once and for all.
“The Council is responsible for the ownership control of the student union’s companies, for example by choosing a general meeting representative and giving them instructions. We propose that with this process the company will be dissolved. We have tried our best, and especially our current manager has been working hard, but the equation has simply become impossible”, sums up Keränen.
The Council will probably meet to decide on the matter on February 14.
