Lapin yliopiston ylioppilaskunta – sopimus
LYY is now one step closer to our long-term advocacy goal: LUC has decided to hire a study psychologist!
Student well-being has been a big concern for a long time. For example, in 2019 the Mielentärkeydenosoitus -demonstration was organized with the aim to get a study psychologist for the University of Lapland. The address collected in connection with the demonstration was officially handed over to Rector Antti Syväjärvi last year. LYY awarded the demonstration as a student achievement of the year.
LYY thanks LUC for cooperation.
Psychologist to start at the universities of Lapland
Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland have increased their student services cooperation since the beginning of January. This has enabled us to enhance the student welfare services, of which the recruiting of a study psychologist is a concrete example.
Our joint teaching and learning services will begin recruiting a psychologist in April. The psychologist will help students with problems in learning, studying, coping with studies, and so forth.
”We wish to support the wellbeing of our students as best we can, and the expertise of a psychologist is an asset among others in dealing with problems related to studying,” notes Rector Antti Syväjärvi.
Teachers and everyone else dealing with students on a daily basis have a central role in student guidance, including student counsellors. Student welfare services are organised by the university’s social workers and PE instructors in particular. Welfare work at universities aims to advance student wellbeing, early support, and life management in cooperation with various service networks and experts in the social welfare of students.
”The current academic environment tests students’ coping in many ways. We believe that having our own psychologist helps us support them in various situations related to learning, motivation, and coping, says Riitta Rissanen, the rector of Lapland UAS.
The student unions of the universities also rejoice at the decision to recruit a study psychologist. Elina Kuula, the chair of LYY, commends student activists for their persistent stewardship and wishes for continued investments in student welfare:
”We are happy with the recruitment decision. Next, we hope there will be many applicants for the job and that other measures will also be taken to increase student welfare.”
”The past year has been very strenuous for students. Many of them have found remote studying taxing and it has slowed down the progress of their studies. Hiring a psychologist gives us means to address the challenges,” sums up Julia Nikusaari, the chair of ROTKO.
