From August 1, 2025, most students will no longer be eligible for general housing allowance. Instead, they will receive the student housing supplement.
Read here what the change means in practice.
The housing supplement is tied to student financial aid
From now on, you are only eligible for the housing supplement if you are receiving student financial aid. For example, if you do not receive financial aid during the summer months, you will not be entitled to the housing supplement either.
If your eligibility for student financial aid ends—due to, for example, slow progress in your studies, delays in completing your bachelor’s thesis, or running out of financial aid months—your right to the student housing supplement will also end.
Amount of the housing supplement
The housing supplement covers 80% of your rent, up to a maximum limit that depends on the municipality. In Rovaniemi, this limit is €248/month. Currently, the maximum possible general housing allowance for a student living alone in Rovaniemi is €312.90/month.
Other information about the housing supplement
The income of others living in the same household does not affect your eligibility for the housing supplement.
The income limit for student financial aid—and therefore also for the housing supplement—is significantly higher than that of the general housing allowance.
Some students, such as those with underage children, will remain eligible for the general housing allowance.
