You’ll be supported by our professional and inspiring staff, who make collaboration easy and ensure that goals are achieved together. You don’t need to be an expert on LYY matters — you’ll receive a thorough orientation and a fantastic team to work with! The Board holds LYY’s highest executive power and is responsible for the Student Union’s day-to day operations. Apart from LYY membership, there are no formal requirements, but good teamwork skills, resilience under pressure, and a motivated attitude toward learning and doing are valuable assets. A year on the Board offers a unique vantage point into the student community and social advocacy. The experience develops your skills in communication, decision-making, event coordination, advocacy, and building partnerships. Board members get familiar with the university’s administration, current issues in student organizations, accessibility, the position of international students, as well as tutoring and event coordination. The Chair of the Board is elected separately, and the rest of the Board will assign portfolios at the beginning of the term. The position is not full-time, but it requires commitment and time management skills. Balancing studies, work, and Board duties is important — and the Board continuously develops ways to support wellbeing and prioritization. According to LYY’s medium-term financial plan approved by the Representative Council, the compensation levels in 2026 will remain the same as in 2025: Chair of the Board: €9,600 (paid in 12 installments) Vice Chair: €5,500 (paid in 10 installments) Board Member: €4,000 (paid in 10 installments) During the summer, activities slow down as staff take their holidays, but Board responsibility covers the entire year and may include summer meetings or discussions. It is recommended to spend both the spring and autumn semesters in Rovaniemi. The Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY) has completed its Representative Council elections, and the results promise an interesting new term in student politics. The voter turnout dropped sharply by 14,3 percentage units from the previous elections, landing at 22.6%, with 1,013 students casting their votes. “Voting activity was highest on the first day of advance voting and on the election day itself. The drop in turnout can be interpreted in many ways, and it’s likely the result of several factors,” says Juuso Kurokallio, Chair of the Central Election Committee. Kurokallio adds that the committee will not speculate further on the turnout decline. “I’m eager to see how much the newly elected council will achieve and what kinds of changes LYY will experience over the next two years. Major decisions and reforms are on the horizon right from the start of this council term. Congratulations once again to all those elected,” he continues. Once again, Artikla came out on top, securing 272 votes and maintaining its position as the strongest group in the council. However, despite a broad candidate base, the law students’ list lost two seats compared to the previous term. Mariel Tähtivaara from Artikla was one of the election’s top vote-getters with 40 votes. In second place was the TAO-lista, which received 225 votes and further strengthened its position.
