- 1.12. Election of the 2026 LYY Board and Chair
At the LYY Representative Council meeting on 1.12., a new board and its chair for 2026 will be elected. Welcome to the meeting in the university space B127 to see what the new board composition will look like! You may also put yourself forward as a candidate during the meeting if you wish. Representative Council meetings are open to all LYY members. - 6.12. Independence Day Celebration and Candle event
Welcome to an open Independence Day celebration and the traditional torchlight procession of the Student Union of the University of Lapland! The City of Rovaniemi and its partners will organise an open Independence Day celebration on 6.12. starting at 13:00, where LYY’s Chair of the Board, Mariel Tähtivaara, will give a speech. The event will take place at Lappia Hall, and before it, those who wish may participate in laying wreaths at the Winter War and Continuation War heroes’ graves at 11:30. The traditional torchlight procession led by LYY will depart from Lordi’s Square at 15:00. Participants are asked to gather by 14:45 at the latest. The procession will head towards Rovaniemi Church via Koskikatu, Aallonkatu and Valtakatu, and end at the heroes’ graves where candles will be lit. Welcome to join!
Advocacy
- 7.11. Round Table Discussion on the Student Housing Situation
The university organised a round table discussion to explore possible solutions to the housing situation in Rovaniemi. LYY was represented by Chair of the Board Mariel Tähtivaara, and representatives from DAS, KAS, ROTKO and the City of Rovaniemi also attended. - 10.11. Professors’ Council Meeting
Chair Tähtivaara and Advocacy Specialist Ulkuniemiparticipated in the Professors’ Council meeting on 10.11., where current issues concerning professors were reviewed. After the meeting, the Professors’ Council organised a meeting with Members of Parliament on the theme “Politics in the Age of Disinformation.” - 14–15.11. SYL General Assembly at Aalto University
LYY’s delegation attended the SYL General Assembly in Espoo. The assembly discussed the future administrative direction of the national student movement, including SYL’s strategy, the upcoming action plan, budget, and policy paper. The 2026 SYL Board was elected at the assembly. The meeting was successful for LYY, as important social policy themes for us received significant attention. LYY congratulates the newly elected SYL Board and thanks SYL for organising the assembly! - Follow-up Housing Survey
A follow-up survey was organised to further assess the housing situation. The aim is to gather information on how many students remain without accommodation or have faced difficulties in finding housing. The survey is open until 7 December. Respondents may enter a raffle to win a €50 S-Group gift card
. - 18.11. Rovaniemi Youth Council Panel
The Rovaniemi Youth Council held a panel discussion on youth housing during the Mun tulevaisuus -event at Lappia Hall. LYY’s Chair of the Board, Mariel Tähtivaara, participated in the panel.

- 30.10.–1.11. Meeting of Periphery Student Unions in Rovaniemi
LYY, VYY, ISYY, LTKY, OYY and JYY form the group of “periphery” student unions, which meet annually to network. This year, LYY had the honour of hosting the meeting from 30.10. to 1.11. The three-day event included various activities such as speeches, workshops, a visit to the Arctic Circle, and relaxed evening programmes at the Leirikarin camp centre. - 6.11. Representative Council Election Night Event
The election night for the Representative Council elections was held on 6.11. at Pub Punapippuri. Participants were able to follow the announcement of results while enjoying good company and drinks. LYY thanks everyone who took part and congratulates the newly elected council members! - 10.11. Hearing on LYY’s Draft Strategy
LYY organised a hearing on the update of its strategy. In addition to the hearing event, it was possible to give feedback via a Forms survey. - 12.11.University of Lapland Open Day
LYY board members Eetu, Gabriel and Alexandra visited the university’s open day to tell upper secondary students from Northern Finland about the student union’s activities. - 12.11. International Students’ Advocacy Meeting
On 12.11. LYY held a discussion event for international students focusing on advocacy issues. The meeting included discussion on the new international strategy and action plan. We also spoke with the attending international students about studying in Finland and collected feedback. - 14.11. Arctic Appro
The Arctic Appro was organised for the 11th time and once again drew a large number of participants completing their “degrees” in Arctic conditions! LYY, together with ROTKO, was present exchanging appro passes in the basement of Amarillo. This year, 14 restaurants took part as appro locations. - 26.11. Food Waste Sits
We organised the Food Waste Sits for the second year in a row in cooperation with the student associations Lastu ry and Kosmos Buran ry. Thank you to Lastu and Kosmos Buran for the collaboration, and to everyone who took part!

- Visit of Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen at the University of Lapland
Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonenvisited the University of Lapland on Thursday, 20.11. In her speech, Valtonen addressed issues such as foreign policy in the Arctic region and current security-related topics. The Minister was welcomed by Rector Antti Syväjärvi. - LYY Celebrated TAO’s 19th Anniversary on 8.11.
LYY attended the 19th anniversary celebration of TAO at Tilausravintola Pirtti. LYY congratulates TAO on its 19 years! - LYY Attended Lapikas’ 50th Anniversary on 15.11.
