The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) has established a climate network, which consists of student union members, including two from LYY: Katja Karjalainen and Julia Kerkelä! The members of the network come up with ideas and develop the student movement’s climate influence, participate in climate influence as an advisory body and produce texts to support the influencing. The goal of the network is thus to develop SYL’s and the student unions’ climate influence and to strengthen the role of students in their work against the climate crisis.
Karjalainen to LYY what made her apply to the climate network and what topics she’s most interested in sharing information about.

“I’m studying in the Northern Tourism master’s program for the second year. I wanted to join the climate group because I think that we as wealthy, over-consuming nations have a responsibility to do our best to combat the ravages of the climate crisis,” says Karjalainen. “I no longer saw that my own actions were enough, so I wanted to participate in something a little more extensive. My interest is the effect of diet on the climate crisis. Also, as a former big traveller, I am interested in tourism emissions and the changes in tourism.”
Liina Korkiamäki (JYY) will serve as the chairperson of the first Climate Network.
Other appointed members of the Climate Network are:
Suvi-Tuuli Ryhänen (LTKY)
