Student tutoring is one of the most important areas of student advocacy. Among other things, student tutors help new students get acquainted with the university and Rovaniemi, offer advice, and guide students in matters related to their studies and student life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


LYY is responsible for recruiting and selecting student tutors, organizing their training, and collecting reports and feedback. In addition, LYY works with the university and subject-specific student organizations to develop the tutoring program as a whole. The Lapland University Consortium oversees the tutoring of international students. Exchange students are supported by Welcoming Bodies, and degree students are assisted by Arrival Assistants. LYY is also involved in developing better tutoring for international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutoring Q & A<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What is a student tutor and what do they do? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student tutor is a mentor who has been trained for this role. Student tutors are on hand at the university to welcome new undergraduate students and help you get acquainted with our university and your studies. You\u2019ll meet your student tutor on your very first day of classes, and they\u2019ll be your tutor throughout your first academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your student tutor will support you with the following, among other things:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u2013 academic procedures, such as registering for courses and exams,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

study schedules, exam results, course credits, feedback, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 exam etiquette<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 the EXAM exam database<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 university facilities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 the library and the Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 the Student Union (LYY) and department associations<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 getting to know other students and the local area<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Do the tutors get paid?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 250\u20ac will be paid for tutoring in two installments\u2014125\u20ac in the fall and 125\u20ac in the spring. The University of Lapland will pay the compensation. The payments will be made around Christmas and May Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much time does tutoring take and when does tutoring happen? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays the time frame of student tutoring is divided to both semesters. The beginning of the year in the fall takes the most time, because the new students start their studies then. However, all of the tutors have successfully completed their tutoring year. By offering tutoring in the spring term as well there isn\u2019t a huge workload to be done only within the autumn term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What criteria is the tutor recruitment based on?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, this year\u2019s selection of student tutors will be based on the following criteria: academic performance, involvement in organizations, groups, and mentoring activities, motivation, experiences at the University of Lapland, and a vision of what good tutoring entails. LYY will publish a scoring system in connection with the application process, and selections will be made based on this system in collaboration with the university and the student organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do tutors get a training?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, they do. The training clarifies the tutors role in the university student community and consists of all essential topics around tutoring and offers the tools for good tutoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
