UPDATE 3.5.2021 11:00 As of 3 May 2021, the Lapland Hospital District will allow public events of up to 50 people or public meetings of up to 50 people indoors.These restrictions are effective from 3 May through 31 May 2021. The University of Lapland will also allow gatherings of up to 50 persons per space.
UPDATE 12.4.2021 9:30 The Lapland Hospital District will move to the baseline phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on 12 April 2021, which means that the use of the University’s premises will return to the restrictions that were in place before the state of emergency was declared. As of 12 April, gatherings at the University of Lapland will increase to a limit of 20 persons and the reading rooms of the University Library will be open to users. In addition, the EXAM facilities on campus will be available.

The Student Union of The University of Lapland is closely following the developments of the coronavirus situation. LYY takes preventing the virus very seriously and follows guidelines given by the University of Lapland and Finnish Institute of Health and Wellfare regarding the situation.

Events
LYY has released an event guide for organizers and participants.
LYY will organize events during the fall semester with great consideration. Big events will not be held in person. We will pay special attention to the safety of the events. Safety measures for each event will be planned individually.
When attending a LYY event please take into consideration good hygiene, safe distances and other virus preventing measures. It is not allowed to attend an event with any symptoms of the virus. We do not recommend for people in risk groups or people in close contact with risk groups to attend events.
Attending LYY events is done at one’s own risk.
Facilities
LYY Sauna is available for rent, but safety regulations must be followed when using the facilities.
The subject association lounge can be reserved within the guidelines given by the University of Lapland. Face masks are strongly recommended while in the shared spaces on campus.

Recommendations
We recommend all events in the University of Lapland student community are held with great consideration. In all events safety guidelines must be followed and special attention should be paid to:
- Face mask recommendations
- Hygiene
- Safe distances
- Number of people attending
- The heightened risk of droplet transmission
We recommend that attendees are thoroughly informed about safety measures before and during the event. All events must have attendee registration for tracking possible infections.

Studies
Face-to-face teaching will be delivered only when strictly necessary (for example courses involving laboratory work). The 50-person limit per space applies to all face-to-face teaching situations at the University of Lapland.
We recommend arranging meetings and gatherings remotely.
General exams will not be arranged in the exam spaces during the spring term. As of 1 August 2020, the EXAM rooms are taken into use more extensively by adhering to safety instructions.
International affairs
Immigration regulation permitting, it is possible to engage in exchange studies and practice (incoming and outgoing). However, virtual exchange is recommended.
Facilities
Face masks are strongly recommended while in the shared spaces on campus. This means that we strongly recommend wearing face masks in the corridors, lobbies, classrooms, and any other shared spaces on campus. Furthermore, on-campus presence should continue to be limited to what is necessary for the purposes of studying or working.
The 6-person limit per space applies to all contact teaching situations at the University of Lapland. Teaching and instruction situations are organised in such a way that members of staff and students can maintain safe social distancing and avoid close contact with others. Everyone is required to practice good hygiene throughout the activities. The coworking spaces that are in heavy use are cleaned more often.
Students have access to the university’s premises during the university’s opening hours. Student key fob holders (those with personal access rights) may access the university’s premises also during opening hours.
If necessary, students may use the self-study rooms on campus during the university’s opening hours (for example, if their work requires access to tools such as software). In these spaces, everyone must maintain safe social distancing, practice good hygiene, and pay attention to the 6-person limit per space.
Face masks
Face masks are strongly recommended while in the shared spaces on campus. This means that we strongly recommend wearing face masks in the corridors, lobbies, classrooms, and any other shared spaces on campus. Furthermore, on-campus presence should continue to be limited to what is necessary for the purposes of studying or working.
The university provides single-use disposable face masks for members of staff and students. Alternatively, you may opt for a personal face shield. Teachers will get masks for teaching and learning situations from Facility Officer Services. For other situations masks are available at Facility Officer Services and at the Library.
Students who are pursuing a traineeship follow the employer’s instructions.
Library
The library opens its doors as of 3 August 2020, and take-away borrowing is only offered to risk group members. You may visit the library only during its opening hours.
The library is open during the regular opening hours.

Know your rights during the corona virus
Student Union demands that every student can study from home and no one is forced to go to the University. It is also important that corona virus doesn’t create barriers for studying and the current situation won’t affect negatively to the quality of teaching. Those are the main goals of Student Union in the current situation.
As a student you should know at least the following things
- University has decided to stop most of the classroom teaching.
- If classroom teaching is still being held and you can’t participate, you can contact the Student union.
- Kela has opened a webpage about corona virus.
- Finnish institute for health and welfare will give official information about the situation in Finland on their website.
- Instructions for distance learning and more info can be found from University’s Intra.
